Safe streets campaign Concludes its first Art Gallery

The Safe Streets campaign against sexual harassment in the streets concludes its first Art Gallery which seeks to reduce this phenomenon that devastate the social cohesion of Yemeni.

The gallery took place in the Forum of knowledge exchange during Tuesday October 25, 2011 till Thursday 27 of the same month.

The gallery presented a collection of paintings of young artists (Mohanned Al Shaikh andMuhammad Alrdaay) which reviews the violations caused by the harassment of women.

حمله شوارع آمنه تختتم معرضها التشكيلي الأول

تختتم حمله "شوارع أمنه" المناهضة للتحرش الجنسي في الشوارع معرضها التشكيلي الأول والهادف لمناهضة هذه الظاهرة التي تزعزع تماسك المجتمع اليمني.

واقيم المعرض في منتدى التبادل المعرفي خلال الفترة ما بين الثلاثاء 25 أكتوبر 2011 وحتى الخميس 27 من نفس الشهر.

وقدم المعرض مجموعه من اللوحات لفنانين شباب ( مهند الشيخ – محمد الرداعى ) تستعرض الانتهاكات التي يسببها التحرش بالنساء.

Launching the first electronic map to monitor cases of sexual harassment in the streets of Yemen

Safe Streets campaign against sexual harassment in the streets launches a map to monitor the phenomenon of sexual harassment in the Yemeni streets within the campaign which seeks to reduce this phenomenon that devastate the social cohesion of Yemeni.

The campaign aims to monitor cases of harassment and encourage the community and women in particular to break the silence and talk about what is happening to them from harassment on the street in order to put pressure on decision makers to develop solutions to this devastating phenomenon of society.

The campaign media officer, indicated that this e-observatory is working to empower community groups who are against women sexual harassment to report cases from anywhere in Yemen, and can send a short SMS from his/her mobile and/or emails about any harassment incident happened with them or any other person they know.

The map aims to monitor the places with a high incidence of harassment on the streets and the types of harassment. This map is the first step to move and to demand a law to protect women in the streets. It is like a database describes the size of the problem, and to help the policemen to be aware of the streets where the harassment cases are high when they distribute their forces to keep the streets safe from sexuall harassment.

Development House Raises the Awareness of Digital Security among Activists from Yemen and MENA Regain

Development House with cooperation of ONO was screening the series of Survival in the Digital Age during 21 April 2011 in Sana’a, Yemen; 4 May 2011 in Sana’a, Yemen; 25 May 2011 in Beirut, Lebanon.

This series of animated films aims to raise awareness about the digital traces we leave behind among activists from Yemen and MENA regain. Its main aim is to engage people in better understanding the information and communications technologies they are using, so that they can decide when and if they want to take risks.

Survival in the Digital Age serves as a practical, visual and fun resource for learning about a subject that can make people feel paranoid or just technically overwhelmed.

“Baheb al-Heah” (which literally mean in Arabic "I Love the Life") on Thursday

Development House in partnership with HIV/AIDS Regional Programme in the Arab world "HARPAS" are screening the movie of “Baheb al-Heah” (which literally mean in Arabic "I Love the Life") on Thursday at Ebhar Foundation for Childhood and Creativity in Sana'a.

The movie was produced by the HARPAS in cooperation with the Arescob company for artistic production, and it reviews television series, titled "I Love the Life", dealing with real life stories of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and from rights and developmental perspectives, which reviews in a scientific, interesting and simple manner by number of actors from the Arab states who have great and large funs, in addition to medical specialists.

The film aims to raise the awareness and of young people of the importance of the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in Yemen and respect their human rights in general. After the film, discussion will be opened about some of the issues reviewed by the film to present and exchange experiences and ideas in this aspect.

It is worth to mentioning that the Development House (DH) was founded and led by youth expert to respond to civil society needs for supporting, organizational capacity building, and promoting for resources and opportunities. DH provides training and consultation services for individuals and organizations through several training programs which respond to the needs of the civil society and strengthen its role. DH considers itself the first organization which specialized in New Media “Web 2.0” in Yemen. DH aims to be the pioneer in empowering organizations to play their role in making the positive change in the community.

At Ebhar Foundation for Childhood and Creativity, 7 September 2010, Development House Organization in collaboration with Bibliotheca Alexandrina and TakingItGlobal have conducted a workshop to exhibit projects and experience of some successful youth especially those who have gotten the grants from Youth for Change in Yemen in the following governorate of Sana’a, Aden, and Taiz. During this workshop, the youth exhibited and explained their success and difficulties they encountered during implementing their projects.

Pointed that part of the workshop which titled on “Youth for Change Knowledge Sharing Event” was specified for discussing the role of young youth in social participation. Further Mr. Fathi al-Dhafri facilitated and led this workshop and gave participants some information and background about Youth for change. Moreover, around 30 educated and activist young people attended this workshop “ we conducted this workshop to benefit others especially those who are working efficiently within communities In how to learn some lessons for the experiment and experiences of some successful young people who contribute some good notions help in change our society to better living conditions” Fathi al-Dafri pointed out .

The “Youth for Change” program aims at inspiring, informing and involving Arab Youth to be Agents of Change in their communities. The phase II of this program focuses on the theme: Global Youth Culture and Participation and was launched in December 2009, through a partnership between TakingITGlobal and Bibliotheca Alexandrina with local organizations in the MENA region. The program aims at encouraging cross cultural dialogue and supporting youth-led development through local projects in 14 priority countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.

The success of the pilot phase in 2008 demonstrated that much more can be done to support Arab youth to be Agents of Change in their communities, as well as to bring their voices to a global audience; hence the need for this second phase which includes the following components:

Facilitating ongoing cross-cultural dialogue through the use of online community tools and spaces provided by TakingITGlobal and the Info Mall. Organizing interactive live chats to encourage discussion among the program participants. Conducting a Panorama and Global Gallery contest on the theme “Global Youth Culture”. Supporting youth-led action projects through providing mini-grants and a project management e-course that leverages the materials and methodology of the TakingITGlobal Sprout e-course. Organizing knowledge-sharing events to showcase mini-grant winners local projects in cooperation with host organizations in their countries.

Awarding scholarships to potential mini-grant winners to attend the Fifth Arab Youth Forum in Alexandria, Egypt in February 2010 to present their project ideas and share experiences. Providing scholarships to selected award winners to attend the World Youth Congress 2010 to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in order to receive additional support, training and access to international networks focused on supporting youth-led development.

Tactical Tech and The Development House (DH) celebrated their first screening of 10 tactics for turning information into actions

At Ebhar Foundation for Childhood and Creativity, the Development House (DH) and Tactical Tech celebrated theirs first screening and discussion of 10 tactics for turning information into actions” in Yemen on Thursday June 17th, 2010. Around 13 people including young men and women attended this celebration and the discussion seminar.

“This event comes as a result of cooperation between Tactical Tech and The Development House (DH).We aim of this event is to make people, activists, and youth in particular more knowledgeable about new tactics of using new technology and how they would be able to make it applicable in reality and their life as well as society.” Mr. Fathi Al-Dhafri, The senior advisor at Development House in Yemen has stated.

Mr. Fathi has stated that after the screening, we had distributed for the participants the packages which contain DVDs and cards which explain the film of “10 tactics for turning information into action” includes stories from 25 rights advocates worldwide who have effectively used information and digital technologies to create positive change. We also discussed how to think about more effective and how to get some benefits out of this DVD to censure practical ways to enhance social change in Yemen and how to make advocacy for any issue they want to raise a talk about.

Tactical Tech is an international NGO working at the point where advocacy meets technology, were established in 2003 by a collective of professionals with extensive experience working with NGOs and new technologies.
